You had recently been reassigned to a new squad: Clone Force 99. The GAR decided they needed an intelligence officer, and you were one of the best. It was your job to know things, and know things you did. Like how Hunter’s voice is deeper and rougher right after he wakes up, or how nimble his fingers are as he sits absentmindedly twirling his knife, or the way his body is unfairly proportioned with his wide shoulders, narrow waist, and thick thighs. So you had suffered silently, managing to convince them to take their next shore leave on Coruscant, instead of Kamino. You were desperate for any relief, even if it meant taking some random clone to bed for a night. 

That was how you found yourself in a corner booth at 79s, already two shots deep. You’re beginning to feel the buzz of the alcohol, your eyes constantly scanning the crowd. You need to find a distraction  and quick before you leap across the table and tackle your handsome Sergeant. 

Your eyes scan over the dance floor, deciding that’s your best plan of attack to find someone and discreetly sneak out the door. You down another shot before sliding towards the end of the booth. 

“Where are you going?” Hunter’s deep timbre reaches your ears. 

“Dancing.” You answer, crawling over Tech before you can talk yourself out of it. 

You make your way down to the dance floor, slipping into the crowd. You hope you’ve hidden yourself well enough as you let your body start to move with the beat, loosening the tension that’s been building. 

You dance for a while, enjoying yourself as you lose yourself in the music. A few bodies brush past you, but none of them quite piqued your interest. At least until someone approaches you outright. It’s a Twi’lek, her orange skin glowing under the lights of the club. She’s beautiful, as most Twi’leks are. She gets close to you, hands fearlessly grabbing your waist. 

You wrap your arms around her neck, pulling her in closer. Your bodies sway to the music, getting closer and closer until almost every inch of you is touching. She whispers her name in your ear as she grinds against you, slipping a leg between yours. You bite your lip, letting your own hands trail down her lithe body.

“You’re late.” He snaps, turning on you as you approach. 

“Actually, I’m right on time.” You say, taken aback by his sudden change in attitude from the previous night. 

“Just get on the ship before we leave you behind.” He says, pushing past you to climb up the steps. 

You glance at Wrecker as he grabs the last of the crates, the gentle giant offering nothing more than a shrug. It seems you’re not the only one confused by Hunter’s sudden sour mood. It wasn’t like you had broken any rules going home with a civilian. Sure, you could have told them you were leaving, but that wasn’t really any of their business. You’re a grown woman, you can make your own decisions. You made it back in time, that was what should matter. 

You head up the steps, slipping into the fresher to change into your tactical gear.

Things don’t get better even as time passes. Hunter, if anything, seems annoyed with your very presence. He stands as far from you as he can at all times, seems broodier than normal, and barely acknowledges your existence more than he has to. You’re not even sure what you’ve done wrong. He’s never acted like this before. He’s completely changed when it comes to you, and even in certain interactions with the others. 

You’re getting tired of it. 

You finally confront him when you land on a remote planet, everyone pairing off to scout. You’re unlucky enough to be paired with Hunter, the others likely doing it in hopes you’re going to sort everything out by the time you’re done. 

You walk ahead of him, not trusting him to not strand you if you fall behind. It wasn’t like you couldn’t find your way back to the ship. You’d studied this planet inside and out on the trip, as was part of your job. You just don’t want to give him a reason to berate you over nothing. 

You can hear him behind you, huffing and sighing as you make your way through the dense forest. You’re getting annoyed by it, the annoyance building and building until you finally snap. 

“What is your problem?” You ask, turning on him. “Ever since Coruscant you’ve been in this pissy mood and I’m getting tired of bearing the brunt of it.” 

“What’s my problem?” He steps up to you, voice seething through his helmet. “How about you sneaking off with some stranger and getting fucked in a alley where anyone could see you? For weeks I’ve been having to smell you, stuck picturing that mouth and all the sinful things it can do, being tortured endlessly and then you go and run off with some stranger.”

“Hunter, are you...jealous?” You ask. You hadn’t even thought the feelings might be mutual. He had never even hinted at anything like that. Your back hits the tree behind you as he pushes on your chest, pinning you there. He steps closer, glaring down at you through his helmet. I know Buck wasn’t originally written as bisexual but looking back to season 2, you actually can interpret buck being attracted to eddie. He may even had a little crush on him. But Eddie being canonically straight didn’t show any romantic or sexual interest towards buck. I think if he was canonically gay and interested in buck and made any moves towards it, he could have had his bi awakening or realization back then and could have caught serious romantic feelings for Eddie. You can’t deny some parallels between his first meeting with eddie and with tommy. The unknown jealousy and the ranting about them. But because eddie is straight and never showed any sign of beeing into buck, his (maybe) feelings for eddie turned into an incredibly great friendship. That’s why I think his feelings for Tommy are very real and don’t have anything to do with Eddie. Tommy is canonically gay and reciprocated the feelings and attraction to buck. He was the one who made the first move and kissed buck. Buck was clearly interested in him and tried to get his attention. I do think that if tommy wasn’t interested in him and didn’t kiss him, buck still wouldn’t have figured out that he’s bisexual and his feelings towards him probably would’ve eventually turned into friendly feelings. I personally tend to hope for bucktommy rather than buddie but I wouldn’t be mad if buddie became canon. But I think the only way would be to make eddie demisexual, because there were really no signs that he likes men in any way other than his strong connection and chemistry with buck. Different from buck where you can retrospectively see many unintentional signs.

Oh yeah! I want to make it abundantly clear that I’m all in the bucktommy train 100%

I fell in love with them and I’m more in favor of them than the ship that shall not be named. I can’t stress it enough, I want bucktommy to be endgame. I’m a bucktommy slut.

I do believe you can look back and see clues that maybe buck was into eddie, whether that was intentional or not. I believe the writers accidentally queer coded him and when they noticed they decided to run with it when they got the green light from the network.

But as you said, he could have had an initial crush on a friend and that changed with time. And that is completely fine! It doesn’t mean he had been in love with him the whole time and repressing it. Of course there is the possibility that buck and eddie can be an item, if the writers decide to go that route.

That being said, as of now, there are no concrete evidence on screen that buck and eddie were/are going in that direction. Like you said, eddie hasn’t shown he’s into men/buck and if buck was into eddie since the beginning and vice versa, i believe the writers would have pushed that queer coding to the max she-ra style to force the network to get them together. There had been opportunities for the writers to not be that ambiguous.

And yes! The canon bi buck storyline is not about Eddie and it shouldn’t be even if buck and eddie are supposed to be endgame. All the signs since 07x03 (when Buck touched Tommy’s shoulder and we all got a little bit of the gay vibe) have pointed that Buck had been into tommy and mistook who he was placing the jealousy on during 07x04. It’s a classic trope and I hate that b*ddie stans conveniently forgot how misdirection works to feed into what they want (not only that, but also stating as fact). When 07x05 rolled around and we got the coming out scene, it’s clear to me that there was no intention to place bucks attraction to men on eddie or eddie also realizing he’s queer. It would have been the perfect opportunity to sprinkle in some queer eddie but there was not even a subtle hint of that in that entire scene and I honestly hope their friendship stays that way.

Not to be a bitch but, why can’t they “just” be friends? It’s so rare to have these archetypes of characters be as vulnerable and devoted to each other, without an ounce of toxic masculinity, being true friends and nothing else. I whole heartedly believe what buck and eddie have is even bigger than family or romance, they are each others rocks and defining them as brothers or “husbands” does a disservice to their relationship. I think of them more as platonic soulmates. They are others ride or die, which reminds me a lot of Marjan and Paul from lone star (they have a very similar dynamic and despite theoretically having the possibility of being a couple - as a straight woman and straight man - I don’t see them going that way ever because that’s not what their relationship is. They love each other, would literally die for each other but are not and will never see each other as potential romantic partners).

On a waaaaaaaaay lighter note: I’m excited for next episode. We are surely getting more bucktommy and I simply can’t wait to see what the writers have cooking up for this lovely ship!

This I feel like is a reference to his bisexuality, being told to conform to the typical standards of relationships, or perhaps to accept his nobility as it reflects on his romantic affairs. Play nice and keep in line. But that’s not who he is as a person and he has no desire to pretend like he’ll ever fit that mold.

Fairly straightforward as well, he’s tired of the fancy wordplay and the double entendres of noble life. He doesn’t want to dance around the way he feels or conceal his emotions. Another reference to his orientation, however I also feel like this might be a small reference to the line in Her Sweet Kiss “I’m weak my love, and I am wanting” which could be an indicator of his feelings for Geralt adapting and evolving over time. They’ve deepened into a need to simply be around Geralt, even if his role in Geralt’s life isn’t quite was he desires. Geralt matters just that much to him.

Okay this line I feel like is the most damning, but possibly not for the reasons people might think. There’s a lot of focus on the “unspoken words of love” section of this line, but I was more focused onto this reference of his music. He’s saying that of the songs he has written, he has embedded his love for Geralt in every line. In particular, the his romantic ballads. He keeps his love songs inconspicuous, switching around pronouns and never revealing a name. Those are expressions of his “unspoken works of love”.

This is where we get angsty. His tone gets defeated and exhausted singing this line. He’s tired of being so desperately in love with someone who will never be able to share that love in the same capacity. He’s had enough of feeling like he’ll never be enough. Radovid has made him feel like he can be enough for someone, but that’s not quite what he needs either (with unintentional foreshadowing to Radovid’s manipulation). He wants to be enough for himself, in his own right, without relying on other people’s perception of him.

Drop the sweet disguise

The fairytale’s and little lies

Can’t drown out all the sound

So I’ve seen this be translated as foreshadowing for him and Radovid’s relationship, but considering that he would have only known Radovid for a couple of days at best, I feel like this interpretation is a little too loose and abstract. We know he writes his ballads about events he’s experienced in his own life, and he doesn’t tend to write about abstract concepts or future events. I feel it’s more likely that this is a reflection of the fact that Jaskier very much knows that Geralt is aware of his feelings. We know that Geralt can canonly hear heartbeats. Jaskier knows that no matter how many pretty ballads he sings and excuses he gives, he can’t hide his feelings, and Geralt will never address them, whether to protect Jaskier’s emotions or their friendship. It’s a feeling of defeat and almost a bit of self-flagellation. Like he’s shaming himself for daring to have these feelings, using a slightly mocking tone while singing these lines.

So take this heart

In this, Jaskier is tossing aside these feelings. He’s willing to let his heart be broken and his hopes be dashed to be by Geralt’s side because he sees that Geralt has a destiny and a purpose. He’s willing to go through the pain of never having Geralt in the way he needs because he knows that Geralt has a greater purpose, and he’s devoting himself to seeing this purpose play out.

In short, I feel like this song is very clearly an expression of Jaskier’s feelings of hopelessness towards his relationship with Geralt. He’s desperately in love with a man who he knows in his heart that he will never be enough for, whether due to orientation or feeling like Geralt has a far greater purpose than Jaskier could ever hope to understand or fulfill. He wants desperately to be enough for someone, and to feel like anybody could be enough to fill the hole that Geralt has left inside him. Enter Radovid, who sees this weakness and immediately exploits it to his advantage. But my rant on the cinematography of the scene indicating Radovid’s calculated manipulation and Jaskier’s emotional vulnerability will come another day.

Another reason why I love your Maeve/Homelander snippets, takes, and posts is that you write them in shades of gray whereas others will write them as completely black and white. Whenever Maeve is in a WLW ship, it's always seen as good but I rarely seen her shipped in MF ships since Men Are Bad™.

Dare I say, you don't write her in a biphobic lens like some authors do. You acknowledge her bisexuality and not simply wave it as a phase.

there definitely is some biphobia out there around Maeve. thankfully it tends to be rare/unintentional, due to the show explicitly calling out one form of biphobia (bi erasure) thru her storyline. (I think it's also rare simply due to there not being much discussion/fandom around her; i think if she was a character still presently on the show and heavily featured and had a large following there would be more of it... lmao). anyways, that's a big part of why i love her - i'm bi, and while canon bi representation has become more widespread and of better variety/quality in the last several years, it's still sometimes rare. and i love maeve for being a great example of a bi character whose bisexuality is acknowledged and does matter to the story of the show, who also happens to be someone i find fascinating for many other reasons!

you speak to something that does irk me around maeve and also around female bi characters in general - there often is that sense that bi women in fiction (or, fictional women whose sexuality is not explicitly labeled but who are shown to have attraction to/relationships with people of different genders) are Meant to be with Women, because that is the only way they are truly living their queerness and thus being Good Representation. i'll stop myself from going on a whole tangent about this... lmao.

in the case of Maeve, I do get it though. because i think a lot of the disinterest in maeve/homelander for some people is not just because he's a man, but also because it is explicitly not portrayed in a positive light in the present of canon, and because homelander is very much the villain of maeve's story in canon. like, not that you can't ship people who have an antagonistic relationship, of course, but like, i can get why some people look at that and are like "i'm just not interested in imagining when they were together"... on the other hand, though, i've seen much more positive reception towards maeve & butcher's hookup (though I disliked the execution of it quite a bit), and I suspect if they had shared even one (1) more substantial scene in s3 that wasn't pure exposition or that one hookup scene, then that ship would have a decent following. and if there were any other obvious male character for her to be shipped with, we might see it more, but the fact is that there's not a lot in canon to foster ships besides the ones already mentioned, unless you wanna work real hard for it :P

overall though I agree with what you're saying. I obviously do not see Maeve and Homelander's relationship as all good. i mean, as far as canon is concerned, I would say that yes, i do think it was "bad" for both of them. hm, bad is the wrong word - it was "wrong" for both of them. but there HAD to be enough "right" that they went there in the first place, and that there's still lingering tension there... at least on homelander's side. shades of gray, as you said.

necessary clarification that i mean no shade to others for holding the interpretations they do, but these are a few common interpretations i've seen in fic/fan posts about maeve and homelander that just ring false and not capturing the "gray" of it to me:

Homelander as totally submissive and Maeve as totally dominant in their (personal and/or sexual) relationship. i know this might be a Preference for some people, nothing wrong with that, but it always rings false to me based on what we know of both of them in canon. (this irks me in a similar way to people portraying maeve as like "always rude and obnoxious loves to swear and call everyone twinks loves to dominate men and OF COURSE she's always wearing a strap 100% of the time because she is mean and hard and rude and masculine and dominant." again, not that there is anything wrong with her being those things. she IS those things... to an extent. but i think it's a bit of flanderization taking the two (2) times she said the words "twink" and "bottom" and extrapolating that to make her a caricature. likewise, i won't claim to have spent half as much time ruminating over every aspect of homelander's portrayal as i have over maeve's, but this dynamic rings false for me on his side, too. it's not that I don't believe homelander could/would want to be submissive, or to be dominated. i do see that. but I have a really hard time imagining him opening up about that to anyone, even to Maeve; tbh to me that seems like it's probably a unique and very important aspect of his relationship with Madelyn, that he's able to let himself be both ordered around and "taken care of" by her... every time we see him with Maeve in the show, he's actually rather dominant and commanding of her. again, doesn't mean he only wants to be that, but it says to me that he feels that's what he's SUPPOSED to be with Maeve. i've written before about how a large aspect of their relationship to me is what they feel they're SUPPOSED to be performing - either literally for the public, but also performing intimately for each other for a "normal" hetero relationship. so it's not that I think homelander would never ever want to be pegged or maeve would never ever wanna slap him around or whatever. but i do think both characters a) want MORE than just that, and b) would not necessarily feel comfortable with doing those things with each other specifically.

Maeve 100% hating Homelander the whole time, her never wanting any part of the relationship and feeling forced into it. again, if someone resonates with this interpretation, that's fine, power to them. but it doesn't ring true for me, and also just preference-wise, I don't like the way this version of it gives her less agency, less responsibility in her own narrative. in ep 304, she actively takes responsibility for being with him even if she presently regrets it ("i'm the one who was with the asshole"), and she also notably never claims to Elena that she was forced into the relationship with him or that she never ever liked him. because she did, at some point.

A lack of acknowledgement of - or feeling the subtextual presence of - the fact that Maeve loved/loves someone else for the entire time she is with Homelander. canonically, Maeve was with Elena before she was with Homelander. she loved Elena first and life got in the way, but she still loves her. and idk, i get why if someone sets out to write about Maeve/Homelander as a relationship, they may or may not care so much about Maeve/Elena, and may or may not like the idea of that ship being "endgame". for me, i mean, full disclosure mosssst universes I imagine for this show i see their relationship as the hypothetical Ideal Endgame for Maeve (though it may be derailed or denied in a tragic story!)... but even if i'm writing a story/scenario that is Less about Maevelena, that is still a really important bit of context for Maeve and Homelander's relationship to me. Maeve comes into that relationship already knowing what true love feels like, and also believing that she fucked it up and lost it forever. However, I don't mean to say that must mean all portrayals depict her pining for Elena 100% of the time she's with Homelander. what I mean is, the context even colors WHY she would want homelander in the first place. for example: things went sour with her and elena bc their relationship had to be hidden - well, her relationship with homelander is extremely public, maybe that'll work better! ... Elena didn't understand/want the life that came with fame, well Homelander's right there in the same boat with Maeve! ... Maeve herself didn't want to come out, well, not only does she not need to come out about being with homelander, the whole world declares that they're Perfect together and WANTS this to happen! ... Maeve had trouble making it work with a Regular Person, so maybe it'll work if she gives it a try with not only a Supe, but someone who uniquely gets what it feels like being isolated even from other Supes!... and so on.

those are my pet peeves, lol, and as you can see, yeah, it's a lack of that Grayness. the grayness is specifically what interests me about these two. that feeling that they're soooo wrong for each other in truth, yet also feel so CLOSE to being right? Like if only, in another universe, maybe they'd live happily ever after. except i haven't found that universe and tbh have little interest in trying :) bc the "if only" is the point to me. which is distinct from what i love about maevelena, of course. maevelena is a ship i do desire a Happy Ending for (at least mostly! i enjoy a good angst/tragic fic too!). i think they're deeply FLAWED as a couple but also right for each other and can pull through a lot of hurt and difficulties to stick together. but they're not better because elena's a woman. and homelander's not wrong just because he's a man. Also, also, it needs to be said - it's not JUST about who's right for Maeve. i have always felt that Maeve is not the right "happy ever after" romantic partner for Homelander, either! idk if there's any other character who I would say IS the "right" romantic partner for him, insofar as such a thing exists, but it sure isn't Maeve. I think Homelander wants to believe that she is that person for him for longer than Maeve ever wants/manages to believe that Homelander is right for her - mainly due to what i discussed in point 3 above: Maeve has experienced that feeling of love, with Elena. Homelander has never had it - not from parents, not friends, not a romantic partner. I think he feels great passion and possessiveness over Maeve because he THINKS that is love, and it's the closest he's had up to that point in his life, maybe. and for many reasons Maeve is the only person that he could imagine being "right" for him based on who he is and the world he is in. but at his deepest subconscious level, he's gotta realize fairly early on that it's not quite right with Maeve just as much as she knows it. Homelander is someone who craves affection, honesty, mutual vulnerability, and unconditional love (understandable!). Maeve is someone who is famously bad at all of those things, even with the person she loves most. they have a lot in common, but their actual personalities and (forgive me) "love languages" just don't mesh very well. i think they both know this whilst continuing their active romantic/sexual relationship for quite a while before finally giving up... and i think they both stick in it for a while largely out of the fear that if this doesn't work (and, in maeve's mind, elena already 'didn't work'), then there's no one else for them. and that's not exactly a foundation for healthy, lasting love, but it IS a really really juicy, endlessly interesting dynamic to me!!!

anywho i could just ramble more on these thread for a long time but yeah, agreed. boo to biphobia and black-and-white portrayals, yay to endlessly imperfect characters who try to make it work together far longer than they possibly should!

7x04 - Buddie is all over this episode and not because we finally got Bi!Buck confirmation

Alright, we got some fanfuckingtastic food this episode and while I'm still celebrating over here in the corner for Bi!Buck becoming canon and how important that is not only for bisexual representation in mainstream media but also for his character, I have to talk about Buddie. (I am not diminishing this great moment for Buck, I promise)

Don't get me wrong. I like Tommy and I'm excited to see how this all pans out and to explore this journey with Buck. Not to mention the whole "Maybe you're more of a Team Jacob kind of guy" from Sal to Tommy back in 2x09, I'm glad to see it come full circle like this because they could have chosen someone else for Buck. Plus he and Buck do have chemistry.

But I have to be honest, my personal opinion is that Tommy is another case of this. Here's a whole list of why:

Another Name Ending with "ee" Sound: Edd-ie -> Tomm-y

Army connection: Both were in the army; both are connected to helicopters (and we know how important the helicopter symbolism is for Buddie)

Dressing Alike: Tommy and Eddie are dressing alike (when Eddie picks him up)

Looking alike: In certain lighting (like outside Buck's apartment door), Tommy has a similar look to Eddie

Immediate Side-eye: Buck had a similar reaction to Tommy and Eddie's friendship that he had to Eddie when the latter first joined the 118

Working Out: We even go back to the working out scenario (callback to 2x01) but this time, Eddie isn't working out, he's talking to Tommy on his phone, it's Ravi around this time not Chim, and Buck is once again trying to get Eddie's attention, but this time not competitively; if this were strictly about Buck's attraction to Tommy and trying to get his attention, Buck wouldn't have gone to this trouble; if Buck wanted to get Eddie's attention platonically because of his platonic jealousy, the basketball game was a better route than lifting weights (which is why they have the basketball delivered at the end of that scene)

Tsunami Callback: Tommy helped the 118 with flying the helicopter into a hurricane to land on the capsized cruise ship to rescue Bathena; it's not as overt and may be unintentional on the writers' part (who are we kidding? we KNOW these writers) but it calls back the tsunami arc for me from season 3, with Buck's and Eddie's separate involvement due to Buck's situation, this time they're together but Tommy isn't part of the 118 anymore

The Kitchen: Buck and Tommy in the kitchen - Buck opens a beer but doesn't drink it, Tommy declines one - we know open beer bottles/having a beer is also an important symbol for Buddie - this felt very much like a callback to 3x09 where Buck was getting that close to Eddie, this time Tommy was the one to get closer to Buck - and it also brings to mind 4x12 where Taylor was talking to Buck and Eddie about the treasure hunt, where Taylor told Buck she loved him in season 5 - the kitchen is not only important for Buddie but also for Buck's most important relationships (Eddie, Christopher (from the season 6 dinner), Maddie, Albert, Chim, etc)

Asking Parallel: Buck reveals Eddie has been asking him to play basketball but he always turns him down, now he asked Tommy & Tommy is going; Buck "asks out" Tommy and offers to buy him a beer, not once but twice Tommy turns him down until the kiss happens; Buck asks Eddie back in 7x01 to go go-karting & Eddie turns him down, saying he has a date as does Christopher

More of the Taylor/Eddie parallel: Ashley C, a dental hygienist, (think "always smiling"/teeth, Taylor on camera) tells Buddie "I love dalmatians" (something we know Taylor referred to Buck as) and Ashley A (a flight attendant btw, a subtle reference to the helicopter thing) says "I feel so lightheaded, I'm having palpitations". Two different Ashleys but it's no coincidence that Ashley "A" is the one to give the Eddie reference (we all know he had that situation going on back in season 5)

Buck keeps mentioning the Tommy/Eddie connection: "You and Tommy have a lot of things in common" - he mentions it twice, once to Eddie and then once to Tommy later in the kitchen

Eddie asking Buck to watch Christopher: While Eddie hasn't asked Tommy to watch Christopher because he usually is out with him, it's mentioned that Christopher has met Tommy and approves; Eddie then asks Buck to watch Christopher after mentioning he's already asked Marisol twice to watch him twice that week - not only does this dialogue put Marisol and Buck on the same level for Eddie in who he trusts but also, in an episode where tons of paralleling is going on, relationship wise in the dialogue (they could have not had Eddie mention that when asking Buck or just say Marisol was busy or something else)

The Chim Factor: once again, Chim is being involved (as is Madd-ie who has also been a parallel for Eddie before) - from 2x01 to now, he's always had a front seat to the Buddie show, no coincidence that he was brought to the basketball game by Buck or that he ends up being there to look over Eddie once he's hurt

The Bachelor Nod: the Bachelor named Joey and the male host that both Maddie and Josh are falling all over themselves to talk to is Jesse (ties into the two Ashleys, the two Sarahs) - I've never watched The Bachelor so I have no idea if Jesse and Joey are actually real (I'm assuming maybe due to the credits) but interesting that out of all the guys they could have chosen be a guest to do this spot, they have another J name, again in an episode where we're getting a name two different ways not once but twice and again, the parallels

Season 5 ATC callback: I also find it interesting that Joey approaches Chim and has his hand on Chim's shoulder the same way we saw Eddie do with Buck back in season 5 when they were treating someone on the ground, at the Air traffic tower, after Ashley A pinned her wings onto Joey

Conchata connection: This character feels like a connection to Eddie not just due to the mention of Mexico but also that "Conchata" comes crashing into the scene; feels/appears like one thing at first but then we find out differently and the real Conchata has been there all along, just waiting to be found - could this be foreshadowing? or a callback to how Eddie first came into the 118 and it looked like there was going to be a rivalry but it turned into something else?

"Seriously cool": Not only is Christopher impressed with Tommy, but Buck obviously is, too. We all remember only too well who else Buck found to be this level of cool and going on and on to Maddie about (hello 2x01 my old friend)

Getting attention: Buck admits he was trying to get Eddie's attention (but not to Eddie); Buck admits to Tommy that he was working hard to get his attention

The Ashleys: Ashley A is from Corona, CA (both Buck and Eddie now live in CA as does Taylor) while Ashley C is from Florida (Buck is from PA I think and Taylor I forget where but Midwest I think? I can't remember for her, please feel free to correct me in the comments, Eddie is from Texas)

"It's only been two weeks": Buck mentions this more than once, that Tommy and Eddie are best buddies after only two weeks - subtle inference back to season 2 where Buck met Eddie and within an episode they had become best buddies and again, the weights scene

Buck's Reaction Compared to Maddie's: while Maddie tells Buck to stop acting like the 14 year old girl she was, her reaction was different though the motivating factor was similar - both Sarah B & Sarah S were blonde, Maddie dyed her hair & wanted to change her name to fit in with them because she was jealous and missed her best friend - Buck (yes, I know he's an adult but he did admit he was acting similarly to Maddie), the only way he tries to fit in is with basketball, before that, it's all about getting the attention of both Eddie and Tommy (and by them showing us the Eddie phone and weights scene plus the basketball package (after he's turned Eddie down so many times) they're subtly letting us know that this isn't just about Tommy)

"Evan": the only other two men (from the 118) to call Buck Evan are Chim and Eddie (I don't think Bobby has before, but I could be wrong) = not a coincidence that now Tommy is (and frequently) and again, also no coincidence that Chim has a front seat to this (when Chim has also been paralleled with Buck like last season & Maddie has been paralleled with Eddie before)

Basketball Game Apparel: Chim is wearing his LAFD hoodie while Tommy is wearing a grey hoodie tank; Buck and Eddie are wearing tank tops (different cuts but both dark colors); as we all already know, TV and this show will use costuming to show when two people are on the same page, doing the same thing, or there's something going on for those two characters that is trying to be conveyed to the audience without being overt. I mean, hello:

Considering Eddie and Buck aren't on the same page right now (Eddie has no idea about Buck's jealousy until Buck does what he does at the game), and while they might be playing the same game, it's against each other, so that only leaves one thing:

So there is a lot of connection between Tommy and Eddie:

(and some serious callbacks to Taylor - I mean, look at that above, TV at the end of the unit #)

We even see Tommy and Eddie keeping an even pace as they're walking away from Buck.

Plus, we also got more callbacks to season 3, for Eddie (which connects back to that 3x09 kitchen scene again because of the context of that conversation between Buck and Eddie): "Tommy's friends with the promoter so we got ringside seats. I felt like I was the one throwing the punches."

But here is where it gets even more interesting:

Tommy is also paralleling Buck.

Tommy mentions being jealous of the 118 and seeing how much of a tight-knit unit they are, after he's been out of there for a while -> Buck was initially jealous of Eddie back in 2x01 because he thought he was being replaced in his 118 family (and appeared to feel the same way about Ravi until we found out differently)

Tommy appears to know exactly what Buck is talking about with dating someone he's rescued by saying "They're always so grateful"

Tommy is part of the pre-original 118 lineup (who knew Chim and Hen); Buck is part of the original 118 who obviously knows Chim and Hen

Christopher cannot stop talking about Tommy to Buck and Buck to Tommy

Eddie asks Tommy to go to basketball after Buck has turned him down several times

Tommy has become Bestie!Buck 2.0 for Eddie in Buck's absence (in Buck's eyes) though there's no reasoning for this absence outside of Eddie's new relationship & Buck's turning Eddie down for an activity (this absence is alluded to when Eddie finds out for the first time that Buck is no longer with Natalia)...well, really 3.0 because, you know...Lena (who also brought Eddie to a fight btw with "ringside" seats, who knew the organizer)

I guarantee we'll get more connections to both as this develops, but I don't think Buddie is out for the count. Especially after seeing the promo for next week's episode. Not so much because of Eddie and Marisol seeing Buck and Tommy together, but Buck's obvious tension that Tommy reacts to before Eddie even shows up, and then Buck's reaction to Eddie showing up.

To be fair, this is all new to him as he states so it makes sense that he's still figuring things out for his own journey. But, at the same time, there did not need to be this many connections that the writers purposely made to either Buck or Eddie for Tommy. That's why, as excited as I am to see how Buck/Tommy plays out, I also think it's like what Ana Flores was for Eddie (though obviously very different relationship dynamics and characters), to get Buck to open up and have this realization about himself, to explore it, and end up wherever he does. So all in all, this should be interesting, for Buck's character alone as much as for Buddie.
